November 2006
- In October, several of us met for dinner at Taste of India to get to know each other a bit and to discuss the future of our group. We're slowly growing our numbers, and reaching a critical mass. This was, in part, due to a successful day of distributing CD's at the Takoma Park Folk Festival in early September. One idea that came up was a possible field trip to the Mount Rainier Library to see how they're making use of the Edubuntu machines we set up. Another idea was to see what Dave Zanni's done with Linux to set up an audio editing studio.
- Greg Reagle of Community IT Innovators (CITI) has looked into the possibility of using his company's conference room as a meeting space and has good news, and I quote: "We have a conference room with a projector. This is just a general approval—a specific approval will need to be obtained when a date and time and number of participants is established." CITI's offices are located at 1330 U St. NW, near the U Street/Cardoza metrorail stop on the Green Line (also on the 90's bus line).
- I've begun working on a small Linux conference (on the order of 50-75 people at present) to be held at Gallaudet University in early August. This is in the VERY early planning stages! So, I don't want to start advertising it too much yet. The target audience will be primarily teachers and those involved with education, but it's open to all. The conference will be largely run by David Trask and Matt Oquist, who have been running the NorthEast Linux Symposia (NELS) for the past five years.
- One of our local folks, Celeste Lyn Paul, is a KDE developer who attended the Ubuntu Mountain View Developer's Summit at the Googleplex. (For more info on the summit, see the Ubuntu Wiki search results.)
- Sister organization the Yorktown High School Libre User Group (YHSLUG), is back after a long hiatus, and holding its first meeting on Friday, December 15 from 7:00 until 9:00. We're hoping to get a report back from Celeste on the summit, among other things.
